Novel I Archaic...

Novel I, I Archaic was the exhibition of my works of art organised by Pune Biennial at Sudarshan Kala Dalan, Pune during 22/2/15 and 25/2/15.The exhibits were the self images created by me during last twenty five years.
The details of selected exhibits are as follows:

1.

                                          "403 Narayan Peth"
Detail view
 "403 Narayan Peth, Pune"
 mix media on metal pan,
12 '' X 12 '' X 2'
1990
This work was done by me in 1990. It is in artist's impression about the area I used to stay i.e. heart of the old Pune city which is called " Narayan Peth".  The people around us are slightly orthodox and love to live in traditional way. They labeled  every act as bad or good. The boundaries of these concepts from their point view was sharp. But they were very friendly and helpful.

I, as a emerging artist, and student of fine art, I heard from friends that the food for artist is colours, This concept was new to me.

In this work on the neck of the pan I have pasted I card size black and white photograph of me and my brother. The sticker of  "BAD" and a spoon with colour was pasted. The swatch of denim as a significant of  new generation is added at the bottom of the pan.Rest of space is filled with collage, papers and fabrics.

2.

"Lost Face"
oil and human hairs on  canvas board,
12 '' X 18 ''
1990

Heartthrob Mane hair  cut was the fashion among art school student of  Pune in 1990. I was follower of that trend. One day I have seen my face in a mirror. I saw it as a bunch of hair ...
I have started making self portrait by drawing in oil on canvas board gifted by my friend Mahendra Borana ( Mr. Borana is a owner of Barana Store , the stationary mart located opposite to the  art school Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune. He supposedly gifted art materials young artists and art students ) .
After drawing, I have loaded colours with hard brush and cut my hairs in a way as they should fall on the canvas. The work was over... I was happy that I transformed my face without mustaches and  flat featured on a canvas...the painting  "lost face was ready".
3.

"Between me and Buddha"
 oil on  canvas ,
180 '' X 120 ''
1996

This is a self portrait called "Between me and Nirvana Buddha". As title suggests it is my experiment about how to show time in space available. It was chalange for a young painter like me to show aproximatly two and half thousend years time in a one visual( The time between B.C.600 and A.D.1996). I have tried to shows the changes in science, society, goal of life and the human being through a series of work,This work is one of them. In which I have selected a Bhagawan Bhuddha's image in Mahanirvana posture and my self sleeping in a sleeping bag. The colours helped me to show the time as I was expected to depict. The sleeping bag is like a shell, a maggot like me can hide. I have really enjoyed while working on the fire like background of myself and the pachwork on the bag.
I remember that this work was well appreciated by painter Bhupen Khakar in one of the show at Ahmadabad in Ahamadbadni Gumpha Chester Harwaitz Gallery in 1998.

4.

"Father and Child"
 oil on  canvas ,
120'' X 90''
2004
Many painters have painted on the topic " Mother and Child", there are few who have painted   "Father and Child" .I am one of them. Here I have depicted my daughter Charvi when she was few month old. The posture is as I have holds her in my hand. The decorative scroll from fierytail story book illustration is depicted in blue at background. This work is in the collection of John Jo, a french bureaucrat to India.

5.

"Self with swine flue mask"
 colour pencil on paper ,
12'' X 8''
2009

Due to swine-flue high alert was declared in Maharashtra during 2009, August. Every one was insistent about using mask while going outdoor. There was absolute chaos in the city life. Govt. has declared holiday for three days as emergency. I have done a series of painting on the swine-flue and people. This self is one of them. This experience was  altogether new to all of us. In simple words  It was a great fear about the death as the news are reporting about more and more cases suffering with SF or death due to SF. Because mask person's identity has change.
6.

"Father's worry "
 water colour on paper ,
20 "X 30"
2011
"Worry of a father" as the title suggests it is about the worry of a school going girl. In this period the  children abuse cases was reported in local daily.Yet another worry was about children's travel between  school and home. The vans and buses  were the options for the transport. The child abuse cases happened in buses and vans in city during the period. In this work my apartment is depicted  and my daughter is coming  back  from the school safely.
It is interesting to note that I have used the composition from one of the Mughal painting for this work. I tried to maintain the flow and transparency of water colours.

7.

"Self-flagellation"
 Acrylic on canvas ,
120 "X 90"
2012
The painting is inspired from Chitrakathi painting tradition. The tradition is belongs to Pinguli village of Konkan region. I was working on a project linked with this art from. While studying it I have done this painting. Here I have tried a visual language which was new to me. The way of depiction tree ,sun, dog was although, a new experience. Here one can note that the dogs are also fighting with each other in the down space of work.

8.

"Family visit to Anish Kapoor exhibition at Mumbai 2011"
 Acrylic on canvas ,
120 "X 180"
2011
The painting is a kind of documentation of an great experience of seeing Anish Kapoor's exhibition. We have enjoyed the possibilities of media he has used. The experience of cannon blast was noteworthy visually and audio point of view.

9.

"Silent observer of Indian History Congress 2011"
 Acrylic on canvas ,
120 "X 90"
2012

This painting I have created after attending 72nd session on Indian History congress 2011 at Patiyala. I have seen the theoretical and critical approaches towards Indian history. Most of the approaches were Marxist, fascists, religious and many more. There were only few historians with a rational thinking. The tigers from folk art represents here various theories towards Indian history with different colours and Indian history playing role of a deer. Self is depicted with a reference book.

10.

"Waiting for a  visual"
 Acrylic on canvas ,
22 "X 30"
2013
As a painter some times it happens as process of creative work that a kind of block come in the mind and are not able to produce an image. I have caught my self in a similar situation. Some time I suffer from an allergy as it is depicted on my proper left hand.

11.

                                                          "After submission of PhD thesis"
 Acrylic on canvas ,
22 "X 30"
2013

It is a self after the submission of doctoral thesis to Deccan College ,Pune. I have worked on it fro eight years. It was well appreciated and received by experts. I was imagining myself as a creature with wings and some extra hands to do multidisciplinary work at a time. The thesis was about composite motifs as I depicted myself in this work.
